After you have decided on a school for your child, contact an administrator at the specific school to which you want to transfer. We conveniently provide you with the contact information for every public school in Kentucky. The official at that school should explain to you the specific procedures required to make the transfer.
In many cases you will simply be required to sign a records release form. These records include things like immunization forms and grade reports that your present school currently has in its possession. After the new school receives the records from the one your child attended previously, he or she can register for classes and begin the school year.
However, sometimes transferring is not easy. Many school districts have placed restrictions on their transfer agreements. In these cases the school may transfer you to the school district’s main office to speak with the Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP). The DPP will inform you of any stipulations within the specific transfer agreement between that school district and the one in which you reside.
Sometimes a school district requires a child to apply for admittance. Only after your child is accepted by the new school district will the actual registration process begin.
Some transfer agreements only allow the children of a school district’s employees to transfer into that district. More commonly, transfer agreements may stipulate that students residing in another district must pay an annual fee stipulated by the School Board. This fee could range anywhere from a few hundred dollars each year to several thousand.
Sometimes districts will have agreements in place which limit the number of students who can transfer. Other times you may hear restrictions or conditions of enrollment that seem to make little sense. Whatever the case, be pleasantly persistent and don’t give up.
We have tried to include as much information as possible on each existing transfer agreement on this web page, but many of the specifics are overly complex or are not easily available. We can only provide you with the information we can gather and sometimes it is incomplete. If you learn of changes we should make to this website, please let us know! We are constantly working to improve this site and provide parents with the most up-to-date information available.
If you would like to have a copy of the transfer agreements we have obtained from each of these schools, feel free to contact us. We can fax you a copy of the agreements signed by your local school board officials.
A message to parents as you begin this transfer process: When you successfully transfer your child to a better school, all of the effort you will have spent will be worth it. Don’t give up if you are told that no transfer agreement exists between the district into which you wish to transfer and the on your child currently attends. Tell them that you know a transfer agreement existed for the 2004-05 school year and ask what has changed. Sometimes school districts don’t consider tuition paying agreements to be actual transfer agreements. If you can afford it, be sure to ask if you can pay tuition to attend that school.
Occasionally a school transfer agreement may be so restrictive that changing schools appears impossible. Don’t give up. Remind the school official that you are paying property taxes which will transfer into this school when they award your child a transfer. Don’t be afraid to talk to the principal, the district superintendent, or a school board member if your child is denied the right to transfer. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Hopefully, transferring schools will be a smooth process for your child. If you have any trouble or questions, feel free to email or call the Kentucky Alliance for School Choice at (270) 782-2140.
